This lot is a community blend made up of coffees from the district of Huabal in Jaen province, Cajamarca. All of the coffees were home processed, meaning they were picked, processed, and dried by the individual producers. Subsequently, the coffee beans were delivered to Chacra Coffee warehouse in Jaen, where they were stored together and blended shortly before milling. Producers in Huabal tend to grow catimor, caturra and bourbon varieties mixed together, with some of the older producers still preserving some typica plants. The average farm size in this area is around 2ha and most of the farming practices are non-organic.

Almost all the producers that make up this blend use some amount of chemical fertiliser, but few use herbicides for weeding, preferring to manually weed the farms. This in most part is due to the fact that most farms (or ‘Chacras’ as they’re known in Peru), are planted with vegetable and other crops which are consumed by the farmers and their family. Since most farmers recognise that herbicides are strong and contain toxic chemicals, they opt not to use them where they grow their food.
